When the Covid19 pandemic hit the world in 2020 I felt deeply passionate about contributing to the fight against this virus. I launched the #covidcareproject to encourage humans in my community to write 'thank you' letters to essential service workers. I conceptualised and organised the Mask Making Movement (in collaboration with Netwerk24) to encourage university residences to compete in a competition to see who can make the most face masks. A total of 5 272 masks were distributed (in collaboration with 10 Million Makers - then 10 Million Masks) in vulnerable communities who either didn't have access to clean masks or couldn't afford them.
When I heard that the humans fighting the real fight developed a successful Covid19 vaccine, I was beyond excited to get my shots! On the day that I got my first shot, I decided to put together a ridiculously conceptual outfit. And, I took some informal shots of it in the space in which I spent most of my time for two years - my room. Enjoy!
Galaxy-inspired stockings, shirt & earrings to say that I am plain and simple “over the moon” about the fact that there exists, in our small galaxy, a vaccine for Covid-19. A black shirt, short and socks to commemorate all those who lost their lives due to Covid or Covid-related reasons.
We are but a speck of dust, but that does not take away from the very real experiences that Covid causes/caused.
My mother’s old shoes to thank my family and those close to me for walking on this journey together. We learned a lot from each other & are helped each other grow in beautiful ways.
Thank you!
Bright, Ndebele bead earrings to acknowledge all South Africans and their struggles caused by Covid. But also to highlight the unity & compassion that we showed - especially in 2020. I believe we must focus on these qualities when moving forward.
My yellow, Research Unit (a South African brand that are doing amazing work in our society) jacket as an ode to all the beams of light that has been shining & continues to do so during this pandemic.
To remind myself, and you, that the light is NEVER absent.
I decided to take (most of) these pictures in my room - the space that has stored so many of my thoughts, emotions and energies throughout Covid. I especially thanked my plants for consistently showing up by doing what you do best and reminding me that that’s what I do best too: to grow!
