This piece embodies PEN’s recycling post and buy-back centre, while also serving as a conceptual "buy-back centre" for the other artworks in the PEN collection. Constructed entirely from the waste materials of the other eight artworks (see if you can spot them), this work challenges viewers to reconsider their perceptions of waste. It illustrates that waste, when given thoughtful attention, has the potential to transform into art. Nothing is truly lost or purposeless; every fragment has its role and value. The central wheel in the artwork symbolises the informal recyclers of South Africa, who traverse long distances with their trolleys and collect waste to support their livelihoods. This piece is dedicated to them, honouring their vital role in keeping our cities clean and sustainable.
