Walking Wool captures the essence of PEN's Ignite Education Centre, located in Sunnyside, Pretoria - depicted in the aerial photograph featured in this artwork. In the photograph, Bronberg Church, the heart of the Education Centre, stands out with vibrant colours against the grayscale backdrop of the surrounding area. The bright woollen strings symbolise the dynamic flow of people through Sunnyside, weaving in various directions. The strings attached to the circular plates represent the children of the Education Centre. These strings trace their journey from their schools, symbolised by the circular plates, to the safe haven of the Education Centre. Each individual string is adorned with a child’s name written in their own handwriting to symbolise their pedestrian journey. While the rest of Sunnyside is a tangle of strings, mimicking its bustling and chaotic nature, Bronberg Church remains a serene and uncluttered space—a sanctuary filled with calm, security, and love. This artwork reflects the Education Centre as a refuge and nurturing ground for each child.
