This artwork portrays the journey of the men who join PEN's Bathesda Project for vulnerable men. The piece creates a visual metaphor between the men and butterflies. The artwork is divided into three stages. In the first stage, men who live on the street come to the shelter like fragile, vulnerable butterflies. Their wings are easily torn, like paper. They find a place of belonging (literal keys to a home) allowing them to be strengthened in the process. This is symbolised by the metal keys. In the third stage, the metal butterflies become white again. This portrays, how having been strengthened and empowered, they take flight on a new path of dignity and independence.
