For Alida’s 50th birthday, her family decided to celebrate with a grand surprise party surrounded by the people she loves most. Alida’s sister, Elsona, asked me to create an artwork as a heartfelt gift from everyone attending the celebration. I was thrilled to take part! But for it to truly represent all 70 guests, I wanted each one of them to contribute. So, on small strips of paper, every guest wrote a handwritten thank-you note or shared a wish for Alida. These messages were then woven into the artwork, with every corner reflecting the light and warmth Alida brings to others. The piece features a sunflower, golden embroidery thread, and a vibrant tapestry of paper cutouts, each symbolising a different aspect of Alida’s spirit.
