My client, Sunet, and I met on a Friday afternoon to discuss a gift for her dear friend and colleague, Janice. Over a glass of wine (or two...), Sunet told me about the incredible woman that Janice is, the details of her character and the stories she shared left me in awe. (Janice is réally amazingl!) And so, the joyful journey of creating this artwork began!
Here’s what it means:
The interlacing of the ropes, together with the bright threads woven throughout, speaks to the many ways Janice brings light and richness into the lives around her. She keeps showing up through every twist and turn of life. The work also echoes the ease with which she allows the stories of others to fold into her own, and how her story, in turn, becomes woven into theirs.
The piece further plays with the idea of being “cut from the same cloth.” At first glance, it seems to be two separate ropes meeting. But as your eye follows the curves from one end to the other, you notice that everything is formed from a single rope. Even though Janice and Sunet come from completely different worlds, they are - like all things - held together by the same thread.
