For this gift, I got a call from London. My client lives there. Her sister lives in Paris. Their parents live in Pretoria. Once a year, they all come together in December at their beloved family home in the Garden Route. There, they enter their haven of four. They cook meals together and share them around their lunch table, looking out at the ocean. She wanted to capture something of this haven in a Christmas gift for her parents, and a smaller one for her sister.

And so, the idea for an artwork for their dining room wall was born. A simplistic piece, suited to the family’s taste, yet carrying deep symbolic meaning. These artworks capture the various routes and paths these four humans walk (each represented by a different shade of green and blue thread), just to come together at their favourite place - their home away from all three of their homes.

Below is what everything in the artworks symbolises. My favourite element is the pieces of broken plates - a metaphor for the meals they share, and the “sielskos” (soul food) they take with them as “padkos” (takeaway) on their journeys to their different destinations.

It was an honour to work on this project, and it fills my heart with so much joy to know that the one artwork now hangs in the place this family treasures most on earth & the other one in an apartment in Paris! WOW!
